While urban gardening receives much attention in society and social science urban research, the more historically established and larger allotments remain strangely pale so far. Nina Schuster changes this and explores social cooperation in various allotment garden clubs of a West and an East German city. She asks how city dwellers come into contact with each other despite social inequalities and how places and specific practices in allotments allow encounters and differential negotiation of different people. This shows that allotment gardens are important contexts for social negotiation processes of urban society as micropublics.
