Their idiosyncratic outlook and philosophy were formed against the backdrop of post-Soviet socialism in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and the band has continued to follow an individual, often controversial path for over forty years, taking them into places few other artists dare to go. Originally released by Cherry Red in 1986, 'Nova Akropola' ('The New Acropolis') remains a masterpiece of politically-informed industrial expression, and signalled the beginning of Laibach's breakthrough onto the international scene, at a time when restrictions imposed on them in their homeland were beginning to be lifted. Curated, remastered and designed by the band and their organisation, this new 3CD edition includes two discs of vital live recordings of 'Nova Akropola' songs spanning the years 1985 to 2021, captured in England, Slovenia, Serbia and Macedonia. Packaged in new artwork and accompanied by brilliant sleevenotes from cultural theorist Alexei Monroe, author of 'Interrogation Machine' and associate of the band, this new edition demonstrates the longevity of both the songs and the philosophy behind them, and is a vital new addition to Laibach's catalogue.

The chemistry between tradition and innovation powered Sir Simon Rattle’s relationship with the Berliner Philharmoniker, above all during his time as the orchestra’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director (2002-2018). As the successor to Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado, his mission was to take this pre-eminent musical institution into the 21st century. “What Rattle has brought … is a new spirit of adventure,” declared The Times in 2006, and later looked back on the “exhilarating, epoch-hopping eclecticism of Simon Rattle’s era in Berlin”. Through all this Rattle preserved the orchestra’s distinctive sonority, notable, in the words of the New York Times, for its “sheer grandeur … and rich, red-blooded warmth”. He first conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1987, and the recordings in this 45CD box span the years from 1994 to 2012. Very much reflecting Rattle’s vision for the orchestra, the symphonic, choral and operatic works range from pillars of Austro-German Classicism, Romanticism and Modernism through French, Russian and Czech repertoire to showcases for contemporary contemporary composers from around the world – and even a film soundtrack. Freudiana was to be the 11th album by The Alan Parsons Project, but during its development, Eric Woolfson decided to turn the album into a rock opera. It was released as simply "Freudiana," and is known as the "unofficial" Alan Parsons Project album. Alan Parsons continued as a solo artist with the 1993 album Try Anything Once, which was musically in a direction more or less continued from that of 1987's Gaudi. Eric Woolfson hit upon the idea of researching the life and works of Sigmund Freud with a view to their musical potential after he finished the tenth Alan Parsons Project album Gaudi. He retraced Freud's footsteps and explored his realms through his homes in London and Vienna (both now museums) as well as literary sources including Freud's classic cases whose real identities he concealed by use of names such as Wolfman, Ratman, Dora, Little Hans, and Schreber, the Judge. In addition, Freud's writings on his discovery of the 'unconscious', his well known theories such as the 'Oedipus Complex', the 'Ego' and the 'Id' and perhaps his best known masterpiece, 'The Interpretation of Dreams' all served as springboards for musical ideas.

The discography of Strauss’s last opera is not exactly crowded, but the two existing accounts provide formidable competition for any newcomer. First there was Sawallisch, conducting the Philharmonia for EMI in 1957 (unfortunately in mono) and a cast led by Schwarzkopf, Ludwig and Fischer-Dieskau. Then, in 1971, came that other supreme Straussian, Karl Böhm, with Janowitz, Troyanos and (again) Fischer-Dieskau, recorded in Munich for DG. The new Decca set brings together many of today’s leading exponents of Strauss’s roles, dominated, for me, by the unsurpassed Clairon of Brigitte Fassbaender, now alas, never to be heard on stage again following her retirement. Heilmann and Bär make an ardent pair of rival suitors, Hagegård an admirable Count and Halem a sonorous, characterful La Roche. (There is a delightful link with the past history of the opera in the person of Hans Hotter: he sang Olivier in the 1942 premiere, La Roche in the 1957 Sawallisch set, and here, at 84 when recorded in December 1993, a one-line cameo as a servant.) For many, though, the set’s desirability will rest on Te Kanawa’s Countess.

Dschinghis Khan (known in some countries as Genghis Khan) is a German Euro disco pop band. It was originally formed in Munich in 1979 to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest with their song "Dschinghis Khan". Their original eponymous song came in fourth place at the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem. Appearing at the height of the disco boom and following on the heels of other German-produced bands such as Boney M, Arabesque, and Silver Convention, the band achieved wide popularity throughout the world, especially in Europe, Russia, and Japan, though they went wholly unnoticed in the United States. Their songs invariably were themed on historical figures and exotic cultures and locales.
