The outstanding musical significance of Johann Rosenmüller, who was said to be able to merge Italian sensuality and German “gravitas” in his compositions in the most harmonious way, was already undisputed among his contemporaries. He studied in Leipzig, and quite soon the town council realized that he was a musician of an immense talent. Rosenmüller therefore received a position at the famous Leipzig Thomasschule, and was considered as the future successor of the ill Thomaskantor, Tobias Michael.

"Ich bin vergnugt" (I am content) is the title of the new CD by soprano Miriam Feuersinger. It refers to Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata "Ich bin vergnugt mit meinem Glucke" BWV 84, but it also corresponds entirely to the feelings of the singer, who is fulfilling a long-cherished wish of her heart with this programme.

This compilation of German popular music represents the diversity of songs and dances that might be heard at the annual Munich Oktoberfest. This Bavarian festival, lasting for sixteen days in September and October, was first held in 1810. Since 1960, however, the Oktoberfest has become a world-famous celebration of local German food, such as würstl, pretzels and sauerkraut, and, of course, beer. There are strict regulations governing which beers can be served at the Oktoberfest; currently only six breweries are approved, all brewing beer within the Munich city limits. The music played at the Oktoberfest, in complete contrast to the exclusive nature of its beer, is highly eclectic. This compilation will evoke the atmosphere of Oktoberfest, lederhosen, the dirndl and huge steins overflowing with German beer before you even drink a drop. Prost!

Several generations of Bachs have been gathered by Richard Marlow and the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge for their programme of motets. All of them have been recorded at various times in the past but many only infrequently, and one or two, perhaps, now make their first appearance on CD. There is no dull music here and two of the pieces, at least, are of outstanding expressive beauty. The earlier of these is Johann Bach’s profoundly affecting Unser Leben ist ein Schatten (“Our life is but a shadow”). This member of the clan survived both the Black Death and the savage bombardment of Erfurt during the Thirty Years War.
