Gustav Mahler never heard Das Lied von der Erde, his penultimate completed work, nor the Ninth Symphony, which followed it closely. He was probably working on them more or less simultaneously. Despite his state of health, he managed not only to complete the full score of Das Lied, but also to prepare a version with piano accompaniment in place of the orchestra. There is however a third version, started by Arnold Schönberg - who saw Mahler as his mentor - in 1920, and scored for a chamber orchestra. This release features the European Chamber Soloists under Nicol Matt, with soloists Anna Haase (mezzo-soprano) and Daniel Sans (tenor).

"New Eyes on Martin Luther" is an experiment based on Nils Landgren's relentless conviction that “music is music” and “nothing is impossible”. With those words serving as a motto, the three ensembles on this live album dive in without preconceptions. The traditional German folk song Die Gedanken sind frei is here performed with a percussive flute solo; Landgren’s smooth voice floating on top of a funky rhythm. Sometimes he joins Capella de la Torre with a trombone solo and when all play together it sounds as if the music was originally written with this in mind. It moves seamlessly between genres and conveys the sound of skilled musicians having fun.

On 11 September 1992, Die Toten Hosen played live in Argentina for the first time in Buenos Aires, marking the beginning of a great love affair between a band from Düsseldorf and their fans from South America.

Schön ist die Welt was also not an entirely new work; it was nothing other than a reworking of Endlich allein, which had been intended for the Metropol-Theater already in 1926. This operetta, which had been staged twelve years before at the Theater an der Wien, was particularly dear to Lehár’s heart and a genuine experiment, most of all in Act II. This act is one big duet for a mere pair of singers and through-composed. In ad- dition, its setting on a mountain peak high in the Alps to which a pretended mountain climber leads a rich American woman is not exactly typical of the genre.

The new album “Our Songs” combines interpretations of very different top hits from Germany, which Anastacia now wants to bring out into the world in English. For her fans here in Germany, it is both familiar and completely new.

Teodora Gheorghiu's second album for Aparte is 'Art Nouveau': the core is Richard Strauss' Op. 22 and 67, framed by a selection of songs from different cultural groups, linguistically and aesthetically. Gheorghiu's homage to 18th-century soprano Anna de Amicis included mostly premiere recordings of arias by Mozart, Gluck, Borghi, Cafaro and Myslivecek and was named Disc of the Month by International Record Review, by Opera magazine, and was BBC Radio Three’s Disc of the Week.

Inga Lühning has become known to a wider audience through her participation in the Frankfurt Jazz Collective [re:jazz]. She has also released several albums of self-written songs under her own name - and when she sings, she always does so sensitively and with the greatest possible dedication to interpretation.

At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the lied increasingly took on orchestral garb. The boundary with opera became almost impalpable. That is what Samuel Hasselhorn and Łukasz Borowicz demonstrate here, in a splendid programme mingling smiles and disillusionment, where some of the most characteristic orchestral lieder and operatic arias of this Austro-German ‘fin de siècle’ era blend perfectly together.

Once again collaborating with director Gore Verbinski, composer Hans Zimmer fashions a wonderfully soulful and thoughtful score, expertly mixing pathos and hope, and heart and melancholy – the perfect complement to this unique and compelling film and its titular character’s tale of mid-life crisis and redemption. Jazz and reggae flavors infuse this lively and reflective musical work, lending a “jam” flourish to the overall score.
